Steps to take for holding a successful Parent-Teacher Meeting

  1. Make sure that you are well informed about the learner prior to meeting with the parent(s)/carer(s). 
  2. Be prepared. Be able to share specific examples about the learner’s strengths, needs, social skills and behaviours. Prepare notes and have questions ready that you would like to ask the parent(s)/carer(s) and the learner. 
  3. Inform parent(s)/carer(s) and the learner of any issues or challenges that you want to discuss, in advance of the meeting, so that you are all prepared to find solutions. 
  4. Start the meeting by discussing all the positive learning and behaviour points that you want to highlight, about the learner. 
  5. Focus on the progress and growth of the learner. Do not compare with other learners in the class. Focus on how you can all provide the best support for the learner. 
  6. Be prepared to ask questions of the parent(s)/carer(s) and the learner. Listen to their ideas and suggestions and make notes. 
  7. Make a plan for how to support the learner at home and at school. Set specific goals for the learner. Decide on the date of the next meeting with the parent(s)/carer(s) and learner. 
  8. Say thank you to the parent(s)/carer(s) and learner for attending and for taking the time to consult with you.
  9. Communicate regularly. Make it a natural routine to hold Parent-Teacher Meetings. 
  10. Use the information from the meeting to improve your own behaviour, attitude and teaching.
