The purpose of learning modalities is to create an inclusive and conducive learning environment which motivates learners. Students have different kinds of intellectual strengths which are very important in how they acquire things.
The challenge is that many students are not motivated to learn. Motivating learners is one of the most important tasks of the teacher. Students who are not motivated will not learn effectively. They won’t retain information, they won’t participate and some of them may even become disruptive. Some teachers claim that motivating students is not their job and they think that a teacher’s job is to know the content and to deliver it, and the student must take responsibility for his or her learning and find his or her own motivation.
A great teacher recognizes that learner's motivation is necessary for success in learning. These teachers should use different strategies to motivate learners to learn thus improving their motivation.
Through this unit, you will acquire how you can apply the complex theory of multiple intelligences to motivate learners (Gardner’s complex theory of multiple intelligences).
·
The unit encompasses the following topics:
- Introduction to learning modalities
- Role of Gardner’s Theory of multiple intelligences to motivate learners
- Strategies to motivate learners to learn

Introduction to learning modalities (60 minutes)
What teaching methods and activities suit different learning style?
Activity Instructions
Teachers should believe that every student can learn. They use methods of differentiation, adapting what they teach, how they teach it, and how they assess. When they create a variety of lessons, they reach a wide range of students who learn differently. But how do they make sure all their students learn? One of the things to consider when differentiating is learning modalities.
We focus on four main learning modalities according to Fleming (1995). These learning modalities are the following:
- Visual
- Auditory
- Kinesthetic
- Tactile
Students see and hear information, move about their learning environment and interact with learning materials

Role of Gardner’s Theory of multiple intelligences to motivate learners (60 minutes)
How can Gardner’s Theory of multiple intelligences be used to motivate learners in your respective subjects supported by ICT?
Activity instructions
The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. Dr. Gardner proposed different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. He explained that people have different kinds of intellectual strengths and these strengths are important in how people learn things. One way to motivate learners to learn is to incorporate multiple intelligences into the classroom environment.

Strategies to motivate learners to learn (60 minutes)
Activity instructions
Different strategies to motivate students have to increase students desire to participate the learning process, thus improving their performance. Students may be motivated equally but the source of their motivation may differ and this is why teachers should use different strategies to motivate their students.

Assessment
Step 1
After completing a teaching simulation (SIMSchool) that demonstrates how student learning preferences manifest themselves teachers need to observe their own learners and firstly identify their preferences and then adjust their teaching to respond to these student signals. On completion of the school exercise teachers need to report on their experiences and submit to a forum of peers for sharing and discussion.
Step 2
Use the forum discussion below for sharing and discussion.
