Topic outline
Introduction
Script:
Student-centric learning includes methods of teaching focusing instruction to the students. It aims to develop learner’s independence by putting learning responsibility in the hands of learners. Most teachers are still using the teacher-centric approach and do not create such opportunities for the learner to be involved in their learning. These teachers do not focus on skills and practices that enable lifelong learning and independent problem solving; they choose what students will learn, how the students will learn and how students will be assessed on the learning.
Student-centric learning puts students' interests and needs first, acknowledging student efforts as central to the learning experience. Student-centric learning requires students to be active, responsible in their own learning and with their own pace of learning.
Upon the completion of this unit, teachers will acquire competencies to identify technologies which will help them to support the learner-centric approach.
This unit includes the following topics:
How student-centered is different from teacher-centered learning.
· What students want from school in order to learn in the ICT based environment
Using the SAMR model to plan the integration of ICT into the student-centric lesson
· Technology options to support student-centric approaches to learning
How student-centred is different from teacher-centred learning (30 minutes)
Most teachers use both student-centered and teacher-centered approaches in their teaching and learning activities. Which approach do you often use and explain why? What makes an effective learning experience for you?
- Activity instructions
Script: In teacher centred education, students put their focus on the teacher. The teachers talk and students exclusively listen. When tasks are given to students, they work alone. Collaboration, cooperation are not encouraged. Teachers are under the control of the class and most of time students make their own decisions and they learn on their own.
When the responsibility of learning is shared between teachers and learners, the learning becomes learner- centric. There will be an interaction between teachers and learners. Students collaborate, communicate and group activities are encouraged.

What students want from school in order to learn in ICT based environment (60 minutes)
What support should schools provide to learners in order to help them to learn in the ICT based environment?
Activity instructions
Script: Learners support is very important for an effective learning environment. It includes what the school and teachers should do to help learners beyond the delivering of the content and acquisition of the competences. The focus should be on the provision of the resources, strategies, and other support (physical, intellectual, social, etc) aiming to all pupils to have an equal opportunity for success at school and promoting involvement in learning. Many strategies can be used by the teachers and will help strengthening inclusive practices and provide the best support for the learners. These include, encouraging active learning, reinforcing new skills, teaching skills students will really need, etc

Using the SAMR model to plan the integration of ICT into student-centric lesson (30 minutes)
Do you think SAMR model can support in classroom technology integration? How often do you use it?
Activity instructions
Script: The SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition) model is used to think about technology adoption.
SAMR allows seeing how computer technology can improve teaching and learning activities and it gives a useful tool to use in order to improve the quality of learning outcomes of students. It includes different levels that teachers can easily follow as they develop the quality of the teaching with technology

Technology options to support student-centric approaches to learning (60 minutes)
What technological options can convey student-centered learning to shape content, activities, and pace of learning? Critically analyze technological options.
Activity instructions
Script: Integration of technology improves the quality of education in many ways such as learner’s motivation and engagement, acquisition of skills and competences, etc. Technology is also a transformational tool which can be used to promote learner centered approach.

How do you use ICT to support centric approach?
Assessment
Teachers design their own technology-enabled learner-centric learning activity to use in their own classroom. Learners will be tasked to engage in various technologies mediated activities. Educators can use a SAMR template to help them plan but must mention,
· What the learning outcomes are
· What the learners will do
· What technology will be used that both the teacher and learners will have access to
· How the learning will be assessed
Teachers are required to have the lesson filed as evidence that they can deliver a SAMR based lesson.
Conclusion / Summary
Script:
Learners develop learning skills when they are given opportunity to practice. Learner centred teaching encourages students to reflect on what they are learning and how they are learning it. Teachers should motivate their learners by giving them some control over learning processes; if teacher makes all decisions, the motivation to learn decreases and students become dependent and cannot learn from and with each other. Teachers should facilitate the learning rather than leading it, and technologies will help them to support this learner centric approach.
