Teachers must carry out assessment activities in order to know if learners are achieving the set objectives and developing competence. Assessment helps teachers to identify problems or gaps in the teaching and learning process so that they can adapt their strategies and plans to the needs of learners. Teachers must use both summative and formative assessment techniques in order to collect information and make judgments about what learners know and can do.

•    Summative assessments are used to evaluate knowledge and skill achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period, such as the end of a project, unit, term, school year and cycle.

•    Formative assessment is daily monitoring of learning to provide ongoing feedback that teachers can use to improve their teaching. Formative or Continuous assessment is intended to help teachers to assess curriculum learning objectives at short intervals of time and provide effective remedial instruction for weak learners, or enrichment activities for high achievers.
