ICT in School Leadership Course Details

According to the draft Statute Governing Teachers in Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools (2014) document under the heading, Managing the School as an Organisation, Article 89, specifies that a Rwandan school leader should be able to;

  1. Establish, communicate, sustain and continuously improve appropriate structures and systems;
  2. Prioritise, plan, organise him/her self and others; 
  3. Delegate leadership tasks to others; 
  4. Make professional, evidence-based and experience led decisions; 
  5. Think creatively; 
  6. Manage stakeholders effectively including holding them to account; 
  7. Create or adapt school policies to suite the context of the school; 
  8. Manage time effectively; 
  9. Be proficient and confident in the use of ICT for both educational and administrative purposes.

This blended learning course entitled, ICT in School Leadership, combines all 9 of the competencies identified above. The course focuses on the development of a School ICT policy that covers:
    • Perceived benefits of ICT in education;
    • Developing a shared School ICT vision; 
    • Aligning existing school policies to support ICT;
    • School Infrastructure and procurement priorities; 
    • Developing access strategies and timetables; 
    • Providing staff ICT capacity and training; 
    • Ensuring security for ICT investments; 
    • Fund raising to sustain ICT investments; 
    • Harnessing student involvement to support school ICT; 
    • Providing staff with responsibilities to manage ICT investments.


Course Outcome

The school principal will be able to plan and manage the school's ICT policy and allocate appropriate roles for his staff.


Specific Objectives

On completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify common challenges of ICT adoption at schools;
  2. Develop a comprehensive ICT plan for the school;
  3. Set feasible measures to ensure sustainability of the school's ICT.


Course modality

The course has 8 hours of face-to-face engagement and 2 hours of online self study after the workshop using this learning management system to access resources and activities.
