14. Assessment

Online assessment

Online learning technologies enable diverse forms of formative assessment: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), contribution to the forum discussion, collaborative projects-based assignments, collaborative problem-solving assignments, ePortfolio development, etc. In online courses, continuous assessment is expected to be more frequent since online instructors and eTutors are relieved from grading each learner’s answers and checking if their grading is correct: many components of online courses assessment (such as MCQs) are graded automatically, instantly and transparently. Online learning technologies blur the boundary between formative assessment and summative assessment: an ePortfolio, for instance, can start as a formative assessment and culminate in summative assessment.

assign meaningful and sensible assignment and exercise that has a concrete and meaningful goal and real application in learners’ lives outside the classroom. Communicate this goal and the usefulness of the assignment or quizzes to learners so that they know what they are investing their effort and time for. Make sure the exercise and assignment align with the goal learners are supposed to reach. Assignment and exercises are in multiple format. An online/electronic quiz with automated grading helps learner self-assess their learning progress, specifically how much of the content they have assimilated, even how much they know prior to starting the course. Those quizzes include multiple-choice, matching and fill-in-the-blanks items. The table below illustrate different types of assignment and the goals they align to.
