UNIT 4: Summary
UNIT 4: Social Skills
Summary
This unit has talked about social skills, how developing them in our learners is an important part of our responsibilities as teachers, and we introduced a simple tool to guide you in developing these more deliberately. By planning to focus on one skill in detail each week, you will help learners to build a range of social skills - and this is just one way to do it.
We also looked at the concept of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), and the importance of teachers being able to model EQ skills, and especially empathy, to help learners to develop their own Emotional Intelligence skills, including empathy.
Research has shown that empathy makes people better in their work/jobs so developing empathy will have positive impacts on your learners’ futures. Empathy also helps us as human beings to be better members of our families, and better at being supportive to our friends.
We are all part of the wide world around us – we need one another for our survival! By building connections to others, by showing others compassion and empathy, we build support networks that help to sustain us all. Everyone can find ways to increase their levels of empathy.
We would love to hear from you on the WhatsApp group and to find out what you think about this unit and whether you have other suggestions on developing social skills, EQ and empathy that you can share!
