Teachers don’t heavily rely on a textbook in CBC

One of the key roles of teachers in CBC is to transform or translate “Intended Curriculum” into actual lesson “Implemented Curriculum”.  As the diagram above indicates, teachers in CBC should not heavily rely on a textbook. Firstly, teachers prepare lesson plans based on the competence standard stipulated in the syllabus. Teachers consider a strategy to translate subject contents into learning tasks or activities rather than just telling learners what the textbook says so that learners themselves can apply prior knowledge and skills to complete tasks or solve problems. Therefore, deployment of CBC based textbook is not an especial matter.  Even with the old KBC based textbook, teachers can prepare CBC lesson plans by carefully referring to competence standards in the syllabus.

Make learning visible

Learning tasks and activities make learners learning visible so that both teachers and learners can observe, monitor, compare and analyze learning progress and/or attainment of competence easily. This concept is known as “formative assessment”. Teachers cannot observe inside of learner’s brain and simple questions such as “Do you understand?”, “Do you agree?” don’t help to assess how much learners acquire competencies. Because a competence is defined as the ability to use the appropriate combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes & values in order to accomplish a particular task successfully. Instead of such simple question, teachers give tasks and activities which makes learners knowledge, skills and attitude & values observable together.
