The purpose of learning modalities is to create an inclusive and conducive learning environment which motivates learners. Students have different kinds of intellectual strengths which are very important in how they acquire things.

The challenge is that many students are not motivated to learn. Motivating learners is one of the most important tasks of the teacher. Students who are not motivated will not learn effectively. They won’t retain information, they won’t participate and some of them may even become disruptive. Some teachers claim that motivating students is not their job and they think that a teacher’s job is to know the content and to deliver it; and the student must take responsibility for his or her learning and find his or her own motivation.

A great teacher recognizes that learner's motivation is necessary for success in learning. These teachers should use different strategies to motivate learners to learn thus improving their motivation.

Through this unit, you will acquire how you can apply the complex theory of multiple intelligences to motivate learners (Gardner’s complex theory of multiple intelligences).
